  • Background: Forward 48 is Milwaukee’s premiere leadership succession pipeline.

  • Challenge: How would they active this leadership in tangible ways following the course?

  • The Results: Maurice Thomas spearheaded Forward 48’s Select Six event; their inaugural board talent match event. Six organizations including and the Mayor of Milwaukee pitched open board seats to the Forward 48 alumni. Forward Alumni are now being selected for board leadership in mass.

Milwaukee Excellence Maurice Thomas

  • Background: Milwaukee is home to one of the largest black-white achievement gaps in America. White students in Wisconsin outperform students nationally. Black students averaged some of the lowest reading and math results in the country over the last decade.

  • Challenge: How do we immediately create great schools for black families? We cannot wait another decade for an answer.

  • The Result: Maurice Thomas founded Milwaukee Excellence Charter School in August 2016. By 2018, it was the top-rated school in the City of Milwaukee. Under his leadership, Milwaukee Excellence has achieved three consecutive five-star ratings on the Wisconsin state report - the highest distinction. Milwaukee Excellence is the first and only school to ever achieve these results.
